Internal Family Systems: A Path to Healing & Self-Discovery

What is Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative, evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals heal from trauma, develop self-compassion, and improve their relationships. IFS views the mind as made up of different “parts,” each with its own thoughts, emotions, and roles. By connecting with and understanding these parts, individuals can achieve inner harmony, heal past wounds, and create healthier relationships with themselves and others. Rachael is trained in IFS Coaching and integrates principles of parts work with somatic healing techniques for a well-rounded approach.

How IFS Helps in Therapy

IFS is particularly effective for individuals healing from relationship trauma and abuse, as well as those seeking deeper emotional well-being. This approach helps individuals:

  • Heal from Relationship Trauma & Abuse – Process painful experiences and create a sense of safety and empowerment.

  • Improve Connection with Self – Foster self-compassion and gain deeper insight into personal emotions and behaviors.

  • Strengthen Relationships with Others – Develop healthier communication patterns and build more fulfilling connections.

  • Reduce Anxiety and Depression – Address inner conflicts and promote emotional balance.

  • Cultivate Self-Leadership – Learn to lead from a place of calm, clarity, and confidence.

Core Principles of IFS

  • The Self as the Healer – Everyone has a core Self that is wise, compassionate, and capable of healing.

  • Parts Work – Recognizing and understanding the different internal parts (such as protectors, exiles, and firefighters) that influence thoughts and behaviors.

  • Healing Trauma Through Integration – Unburdening wounded parts and fostering inner harmony.

  • Non-Pathologizing Approach – Viewing all parts as valuable and working towards balance rather than suppression.

What to Expect in an IFS Session

IFS therapy is a gentle and empowering process that allows individuals to build self-awareness and inner healing. A typical session may involve:

  • Identifying and exploring different parts of the self.

  • Engaging in compassionate dialogue with protective and wounded parts.

  • Working toward unburdening past trauma and emotional pain.

  • Strengthening the Self’s leadership to create lasting inner balance.

  • Integrating insights to improve emotional well-being and relationships.
